Linda Porterfield, a long-time resident of Oxford, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 9th, at the age of 75. Born Linda Cook in Fort Payne, Alabama, on February 28, 1949, she was the youngest of seven children.
Beyond her quiet strength and gentle nature, Linda possessed a sharp wit and a quick sense of humor. Her unexpected humor often brought laughter and light to any situation. She will be remembered not only for her kindness and compassion but also for her ability to find humor in life’s everyday moments.
Linda was married to Barry Porterfield on May 17, 1975, in Decatur, Georgia. They remained married and faithful to each other until his death in 2008. She is survived by her two sons, Jon and Chuck, and her grandchildren Ryan, Taylor, and Nicholas. All will cherish her memory.
A dedicated nurse at Emory Hospital, Linda’s career was a testament to her compassionate spirit. She cared for her patients with unwavering kindness and a gentle touch. Before her nursing career, she was a working mother employed by Amoco Oil. She obtained her Registered Nurse degree from DeKalb County College.
In her later years, Linda found solace and joy in the art of quilting. She was an active member of a local quilting group, where she shared her creativity and passion with others. Her lifelong interest in arts and crafts was evident in her many hobbies. Her lake house, overlooking the serene beauty of Lake Stone Lea, was her sanctuary. She loved feeding the local wildlife, particularly the birds and ducks. Her home was always filled with the love and companionship of her furry friends, a menagerie of cats and dogs.
Linda was preceded in death by her siblings, Ruby Nell Cook (born 1932), Jimmie Lou Cook (born 1934), Wilma Joyce Cook (born 1938), Shelby Ann Cook (born 1939), and Geraldine J Cook (born 1942). She is survived by her brother, Harding Van Cook Jr.
