Floyd Harris Obituary

Elder Harris' Favorite Phrase “God Will Provide.”

Elder Floyd Louis Harris was born on March 24, 1937 to the late Manuel and Addie B. Harris in Coatopa, Alabama.  At an early age, he was baptized at St. Michael Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Pottage.  Floyd attended Belmount High School in Bessemer, Alabama and received a certificate as a Certified Tailor.  In 1955, Floyd ventured to Chicago, IL and there he met and was united in holy matrimony to Sallie Mae Alexander for 41 years.  To this union, 4 children were born.  In 1975, Elder Harris was ordained as a minister at the Church of the Living God C.W.F.F. Temple 93, under the leadership of Pastor William Haywood.  As a man of God, Elder Harris always had a spiritual word of encouragement.  So, when God called him to lead his flock and go out amongst men to spread his word, Floyd accepted this whole heartedly, and oh how he loved the Lord.  He loved spreading the gospel to any and everyone he met.  Floyd, affectionately known as “SMUT” was always full of life.  Growing up, even though he was a brother, he was like a second mother to his siblings.  He was a great cook and care taker when his parents had to be away from the home.  Floyd was entrusted with the care of his sibling.  He took on that role with pride and his parents had confidence and trust in him as if they were there.  Many childhood adventure and family stories occurred while the parents were away, and boy do they have some stories to tell!  Oh! And how he loved to eat.  All food was his favorite food.  Not only did he eat good, he was an excellent cook.  He would always say, he taught his late wife how to cook, but once she learned, she out cooked him.  Although he loved everyone he encountered, Floyd’s greatest love was God and his children.  So, when his daughter, Valerie, became ill and was placed in Hospice care, without hesitation, he came to Georgia to care for her and be by her side.

Elder Harris departed this life on Saturday November 17, 2018.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Addie B. Harris; one sister, GoldEster Rollins; three brothers, Rayford Maye, Felix Harris, and Alj Harris; wife of 41 years, Sallie Mae Harris; one grandson, Daniel Taylor Jr.; and one daughter, Valerie Ladean Harris, who followed him in death on November 23, 2018.
