Elizabeth Ann Wells, 67, late of Lithonia, GA, went home to be with the Lord and her parents after a year-long battle with cancer, on Thursday, April 7, 2022, three days before her 68th birthday. She was born on April 10, 1954, in Oak Ridge, TN, to the late George Fillmore and Annelle Coalson Wells.
Elizabeth had a difficult life from the beginning. Within the first few days of life, she had a cerebral hemorrhage that caused a variety of developmental problems as she grew up. She first attended Glenwood Elementary School, then Daniel Arthur Rehabilitation Center in Oak Ridge for some years, and finally Special Education classes at Jefferson Junior High and Oak Ridge High School, where she eventually graduated with the class of 1977.
Elizabeth’s disabilities were so singularly unique that she had difficulty finding her best place in the world. The family is grateful for the opportunities for growth and adjustments various organizations, services, and group homes offered Elizabeth throughout her life. Each one assisted in specific ways to help her manage and enjoy her day-to-day living as much as possible. They are Orange Grove Center, Chattanooga, TN; Frank Callaghan Towers apartments for seniors and the disabled, Oak Ridge, TN; Annandale Village, Suwanee, GA; DAUFY Family Homes, Alpharetta, GA; Grace Personal Care Home, Jonesboro, GA; Rescare Community Living, Lithonia, GA; and Amicasa Home Care, Decatur, GA.
Despite always needing caregivers to help with her daily life as an adult, Elizabeth counted them among her friends and family that she loved, and she was loved by them in return. She had a smile that could light up a room when she laughed. She collected owls as a hobby and loved the color orange. Perhaps her favorite thing to do was go out to eat, especially if shrimp was on the menu!
The Family had planned to visit Elizabeth on her birthday, April 10th, but she died on the 7th. We know that she knew Jesus as her Savior and we believe that she celebrated her best birthday yet in her healed body and mind – in Heaven.
Elizabeth is survived by three siblings; two sisters, Andrea Wells Miller (the late Keith Miller), Austin, TX; Linda Wells Carswell, Bryson City, NC; and a brother, George Thomas (Tom) Wells (Susan), Melbourne, FL. Also surviving are nephew Michael Thomas Wells (Rebekah), Palm Bay, FL; niece Jacquelyn Annelle Wells of Louisville, KY; niece Jessica Ann Wells of Bluefield, VA; niece Kimberly Carswell Huggins (Quint) of Oak Ridge, TN; nephew Robert Christian Carswell of Bryson City, NC; several great nieces and nephews and one great-great nephew; as well as a very special caregiver and friend, Dotse Oyarebu Yerimah (Nurudeem), Jonesboro, GA.
Funeral services were held at the Plummer Funeral Home chapel, Decatur, GA at 7:00 pm on Monday, April 11, 2022, with the Reverend Trammell Kitchens of Amicasa Home Care officiating, and at the Weatherford Mortuary chapel, Oak Ridge, TN at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, with Tom Wells, brother of the deceased, officiating. The family received friends from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm prior to each service. Michael Jones, friend of the family, sang a version of “Old Memory” both evenings.
Interment was held at 9:00 am Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Clinton, TN with Pastor Tony Maples of Harvest Point Church, Karns, TN, officiating.
