Deborah Smith Obituary

Deborah Carter Smith, affectionately known as Pugsey, peacefully departed this life surrounded by her family on August 15, 2025, at Brightmore Hospice in Conyers, Georgia. She was 70 years old.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, Deborah was the cherished daughter of Arthur Carter and Rosaline Scott Macchia, and later lovingly raised by her stepfather, Anthony Macchia, whom she proudly called “Dad.” From an early age, Deborah radiated warmth, wisdom, and a deep spiritual presence that would become the cornerstone of her life.

Deborah pursued her education at Kean University in Union, New Jersey, majoring in Speech Pathology. Her love for communication and helping others led her to a career as a substitute teacher, where she inspired students across middle and high schools with her patience, insight, and unwavering encouragement.

Her entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly through her ventures, including Locks and Deb’s Travel Associates, where she combined her love of business with her passion for exploration. She believed deeply in the power of travel to broaden horizons and instilled that belief in her children, whom she wanted to see the world and be exposed to different cultures.

Deborah was a proud soccer mom and coach, cheering from the sidelines and guiding young athletes with the same devotion she gave her own family. Her involvement with Stone Mountain Youth Soccer was more than a pastime - it was a testament to her commitment to nurturing growth and teamwork.

She was a devout Christian woman that committed her life to the Lord, and was admired as a beacon of faith and love, and a guiding light within her church community. As a member of Connect Point Church and the Prayer Warriors, Deborah offered spiritual counsel, comfort, and strength to all who sought her wisdom. Her faith was not just practiced, it was lived.

Deborah was known for her radiant spirit, her boundless generosity, and her role as a spiritual guide to many. Her presence was a source of peace, her words a balm, and her love a constant. She believed in exposing her sons to the richness of the world and different cultures, a dream that continues to shape their lives.

She is preceded in death by her beloved mother, Rosaline Scott Macchia, and is survived by: her devoted husband, Locksley Smith; sons, Dominique Smith and Dion Smith; stepdaughter, Monique McClean; sister, Lisa Carter; nephews, Maurice Carter and Isaiah Carter; niece, Tori Cotton; father figure, Anthony Macchia; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Deborah’s legacy lives on in the hearts of her family, her church, and the countless lives she touched with her grace and generosity.

"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."
— Psalm 91
