Obituary

Fay Hyacinth Simpson was a woman of warmth, generosity, and love. Affectionately known as "The Ellis Island of the Streete Family," Fay opened her home to relatives migrating to the United States, giving many their first safe place to land and begin again.

Fay was born on April 26, 1940. She attended Brownsville All-Age School before studying at Mrs. Morgan's School of Shorthand & Typing, where she trained as a secretary.

In 1967, Fay migrated to New York. She worked as a Lab Technician at Unity Hospital and later as a Claims Adjuster with 1199 Union. She later opened The Blinking Beacon restaurant in Virginia with her niece, Erica, where she brought people together through good food, laughter, and fellowship.

There was always a party at Fay's house. Family and friends knew they would find laughter, love, and a seat at her table. Her stew peas, sweet-and-sour chicken, and cheesecakes were family favorites.

In 1962, Fay married Steve Ashley, and they were blessed with a daughter, Sharon. In 1973, she married Andre Simpson, and together they welcomed their son, Michael.

In 1991, Fay returned to New York, where she worked as a home attendant until the early 2000s. In 2009, she relocated to Georgia, where she resided with Sharon. Fay was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Elfreda Streete; her granddaughter, Crystal Humphries and all nine of her siblings.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory, her daughter, Sharon (Kevin); her son, Michael (Tyi); her grandchildren, Tiffany, Laura, Jelani, Sekai, Dominique, Jayden, Sarae, and Skylah; and a host of family and friends.
