Dr. Daniel "Dan" Campbell passed away peacefully at home on October 9, 2026 following complications related to long-term radiation treatments, after successfully overcoming tonsil cancer in 2026.

Born on September 19, 1952, in Brooklyn, New York, Daniel was the son of Sulo and Patricia Schmid Campbell. His family lineage carries a historic legacy, with roots that trace directly back to Mayflower passenger Priscilla. Daniel spent his youth in New York, attending parochial school and creating fond memories during childhood summers at his grandparents' Shushan farm.

He graduated from Archbishop Molloy High School on Long Island and went on to study organic chemistry at the School of Forestry in Syracuse, New York.

Seeking new academic horizons, Daniel moved to Atlanta, Georgia, to continue his advanced studies at Georgia Tech. He completed his Ph.D. in 1982 and accepted a two-year postdoctoral position with the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI).

This launched a brilliant 30-year career as a research scientist specializing in integrated optic chemistry. Daniel remained a respected and foundational presence at GTRI until his retirement in 2014.
